The ACI Dakota Chapter co-sponsored the 52nd Annual Concrete Conference held on Friday, March 4, 2016 at the South Dakota School of Mines & Technology attracting over 100 concrete experts from all over the country. Michael Schneider, Senior Vice President of Baker Concrete Construction and ACI Vice President, presented the noon luncheon keynote on “Communications between Contractors and Engineers—Make it Work.” Luke Snell, Senior Materials Engineer at Western Technologies in Phoenix and board director for the ACI Arizona Chapter discussed construction of the Hoover Dam. The conference theme, “Non-Destructive Testing of Concrete,” refers to methods that can be used to evaluate concrete without destroying the concrete itself. Additionally, the American Society of Civil Engineers hosted Schneider’s afternoon talk on the complex construction of the Miami Science Museum, including construction safety issues. The American Concrete Institute has Chapters and Student Chapters located throughout the world. Participation in a local chapter can be extremely rewarding in terms of gaining greater technical knowledge and networking with leaders in the concrete community.
