Iraq, Korea, India, Japan, Taiwan, Sweden, USA—speakers from ACI chapters and concrete associations in these countries traveled to The Concrete Convention and Exposition in Milwaukee, WI, USA, April 17, 2016, to meet and learn with other industry professionals from around the world at the international forum. ACI Vice President Michael Schneider welcomed global attendees to the ACI Convention and Milwaukee. Attendees gather at the forum to meet ACI international partners, ACI chapter representatives, and ACI leadership about worldwide events, activities, initiatives, and common themes of interest to the concrete materials, design, and construction industry. The popular forum provides a great opportunity to share information on their organization’s activities and plans, and provides networking opportunities among ACI Members, Chapter Representatives, ACI Leaders, and ACI International Partners. Attendees have an opportunity to learn about other international organizations – their activities, upcoming publications and events, and how ACI is working with its International Partners to collaboratively develop and disseminate technical information on concrete and concrete structures. Presentations: ACI Iraq Chapter Update - Dr. Hasan Al-Nawadi, ACI Iraq Chapter Report on ISO-TC 71 21st Plenary Meeting in Seoul, Korea - Prof. Jongsung Sim (Korea Concrete Institute) ACI India Chapter Update - Mr. Sourabh Manjrekar, Board of Direction, ACI India Chapter Japan Concrete Institute (JCI) - Prof. Hitoshi Shiohara, Japan Concrete Institute (JCI) Asian Concrete Federation (ACF) Update - Prof. Man-Yop Han, President, Asian Concrete Federation ACF) Korea Concrete Institute (KCI) - Prof. Jae-Hoon Lee, Korea Concrete Institute (KCI) ACI 318-14 Chinese Translation by Taiwan Chapter, CIHE, and TCI in Taiwan – Prof. Hung-Jen (Harry) Lee, ACI Taiwan Chapter Swedish Concrete Association (SCA) Update – Mr. Johan Silfwerbrand, Swedish Concrete Association (SCA) Portland Cement Association Update – Larry Novak, Director of Structural Engineering, Portland Cement Association Presentation Highlights: The ACI Iraq Chapter shared information on the formation of the chapter and its current activities, including lectures at Iraqi universities introducing the ACI Iraq Chapter, educational seminars, and a student competition. Prof. Jongsung Sim, of the Korea Concrete Institute focused on the work of ISO TC71 Committee, Concrete, Reinforced Concrete and Prestressed Concrete. There are now 39 participating countries in ISO TC71, which works towards standardization of the design, construction, and technology of concrete. Prof. Sim shared details about the 21st ISO TC71 Plenary Meeting in Seoul, Korea, in 2015, and stressed the need to participate to unify international codes. Sourabh Manjrekar, Director of ACI India Chapter, focused on opportunities for the concrete industry in India, specifically through technology transfer initiatives such as ACI Certification, ACI University, and technical documents. Mr. Manjrekar told attendees that the 2nd R.N. Raikar Memorial International Conference attracted representatives from 23 nations, which focused on “Advances in Science and Technology of Concrete.” Prof. Hitoshi Shiohara, of the Japan Concrete Institute, presented details of their 50th anniversary celebration that took place in 2015. As part of the anniversary, three international symposiums on topics related to strategic initiatives focused on concrete engineering of the next generation. Read more about the celebration here. Prof. Man-Yop Han, President of the Asian Concrete Federation, focused on the increasing importance of Asia in terms of concrete production and use, noting that in 2015 80% of world cement production was in Asia. Prof. Han discussed ACF’s objectives, membership, and the regions it represents, and noted the large amount of concrete research being undertaken in the region. Prof. Jae-Hoon Lee of the Korea Concrete Institute presented details of their latest convention and KCI’s International Journal of Concrete Structures and Materials which published 297 papers in 2015. KCI’s next convention will be May 11-13, 2016, in Yeosu City. Prof. Hung-Jen (Harry) Lee, of ACI Taiwan Chapter, presented a synopsis of the translation into Chinese of ACI 318-14 Building Code for Structural Concrete, including a background of codes used in Taiwan. Prof. Lee noted that a major source of local building codes in Taiwan were ACI 318-95, and ACI 318-05 Building Codes. Mr. Johan Silfwerbrand, of the Swedish Concrete Association, discussed the association's objectives, networking, committees, and the association magazine, “Betong.” Information was conveyed about activities in 2015, such as the Concrete Gala, and about what to expect in 2016, including seminars, technical visits, Träffpunkt Betong (Concrete Day) in September, and the next Betonggalan (Concrete Gala) on November 10th, 2016. Larry Novak, Director of Structural Engineering at Portland Cement Association, told attendees that this year PCA is celebrating its 100th anniversary. He amused attendees with photos of some testing being done back in 1916. Attendees appreciated Novak’s comment that, “one test is worth a thousand opinions.” Novak continued, “The anniversary marks an occasion to not only celebrate the association, but where the industry has come and where it is heading into the next century. Many of the roads and buildings promoted a century ago not only still exist, but remain in active use. This is not just a testament to the resiliency of concrete, but also its role as a building block of society. Without concrete our homes, roads, schools, and cities would not exist as they are today.” ACI Vice President Schneider closed the forum by wishing PCA a very “Happy Birthday.” The Forum was followed by a lunch presentation by Dr. Zongjin Li of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology titled "Sustainable Development of Concrete Technology in China." The presentation discussed scientific strategies for the sustainable development of concrete infrastructure in China, including a new understanding of the nature of cement hydration, the origin of mechanical properties, deterioration mechanism of concrete under the coupling effect of loading and environmental factors, the load-carrying and durability unified serve life design theory, and the methodologies for developing tougher and more ductile concrete to improve the serviceability of concrete structures. The sustainable features of several typical concrete infrastructures in China, such as the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge, Three Gorges Dam, and Jinghu High-Speed Railway were also presented. Following the lunch, attendees were able to attend the International Session: At the Frontiers of Concrete Technology and Sustainable Development in China. This session focused on the exciting progress in infrastructure construction in China that has been empowered not only by evolution of new materials but also renovation of traditional materials, both accompanied with notable challenges to sustainable development. ACI maintains its relationship with the international concrete community through participation in international events, active and influential International Chapters, and collaboration with International Partners.
