The American Concrete Institute recently joined a group of companies and organizations throughout the concrete and cement sector as a founding member of the Concrete Sustainability Council. The Council aims to develop an international responsible sourcing certification system for the cement and concrete sector. By creating a certification system for responsibly sourced concrete, the concrete industry aims to highlight the essential role of concrete in creating a sustainable construction sector, while maximizing the contribution to society and minimizing the environmental footprint of buildings. The Concrete Sustainability Council scheme is a product certification system aiming to encourage responsible practices across the construction value chain by providing companies and organizations around the world with incentives that reward sustainable efforts. Furthermore, the responsible sourcing system provides tangible evidence to share with customers, stakeholders and shareholders, supporting internal investment in sustainability initiatives. “Through our committees and member community, the American Concrete Institute raises the level of awareness and education for increased sustainability, and identifies and removes barriers to the adoption of more sustainable concrete practices, technologies, standards, and specifications,” said Ronald G. Burg, P.E., Executive Vice President, ACI. “By joining as a founding member of the Concrete Sustainability Council, we hope to leverage the Institute’s industry-leading technical resources and global reach to further accelerate acceptance of sustainable practices throughout the concrete materials, design, and construction industry.” To learn more about the Concrete Sustainability Council, visit http://www.concretesustainabilitycouncil.org/
