As another year of our 113-year history comes to a close, I’d like to take a moment to share with you some of the many highlights from within our member community – because only through our collective accomplishments are we able to truly realize the strength of our membership. Certainly, one of our industry’s highlights was when the Palazzo Italia (Italian Pavilion Expo 2015) in Milan, Italy, was recognized during the second-annual ACI Excellence in Concrete Construction Awards. Hundreds of members joined us at the gala in Philadelphia to celebrate Palazzo Italia and eleven other award-winning projects, while thousands more participated virtually on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. And, let me be the first to invite you to join us in person for the third-annual celebration on October 16, 2017, in Anaheim, CA, USA. It wasn’t all celebration, though – our members were hard at work advancing the Institute’s mission. New code requirements for concrete repair (ACI 562-16) were published, along with a new companion guide featuring many examples of concrete repair. ACI expanded the number of translations for ACI 318-14 with a new Simplified Chinese version, joining existing versions in English, Spanish, and Traditional Chinese. New books on decorative concrete, and concrete fundamentals (in English and Spanish) were also published. In all, hundreds of documents, guides, certification workbooks, free on-demand videos, ACI University Courses, and more, were launched in 2016 – all built from the collective knowledge of ACI members. Working with colleagues to strengthen global partnerships, ACI established new agreements in the United Kingdom, Vietnam, Thailand, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, and El Salvador. A new chapter was launched in Mexico, and ACI student members from North Carolina State University embarked on an education experience to the Panama Canal. Countless ACI members travelled the globe to share our vision of a future where everyone has the knowledge needed to use concrete effectively. We’ve made significant improvements to the Online ACI Collection (and we’ve also lowered the price), but I think the most substantial improvements to our offerings are yet to come. In partnership with the Board of Direction and several ACI committees, we’re looking to improve our membership offerings and grow our chapter network – all with the goal of educating, sharing, and learning more from our diverse global community. I sincerely welcome your ideas as we advance these initiatives next year. 2016 was also a great year for the ACI Foundation . Through the ongoing support of ACI along with generous individual and organizational donors, this year the ACI Foundation was able to award 17 deserving students with fellowships and scholarships, while also providing an increased level of funding to four industry-critical research projects and technology advancement. With your continued membership and participation, ACI will continue its industry-leading technical knowledge while pursuing new initiatives that expand our global collaboration, membership opportunities, and engagement with the industry’s brightest and best. 2017 promises to be an exciting year – I hope you’ll continue sharing the journey with us. Sincerely, Ron Burg Executive Vice President American Concrete Institute
