ACI Vice President Mr. Khaled Awad welcomed representatives from around the world to the International Forum at The Concrete Convention and Exposition in Detroit, MI, USA, March 26, 2017. Speakers from ACI chapters and concrete associations in nine countries traveled to meet and learn with other industry professionals from around the world. Attendees gather at the forum to meet ACI international partners, ACI chapter representatives, and ACI leadership about worldwide events, activities, initiatives, and common themes of interest to the concrete materials, design, and construction industry. The popular forum provides a great opportunity learn about other international organizations – their activities, upcoming publications and events, and how ACI is working with its International Partners to collaboratively develop and disseminate technical information on concrete and concrete structures. Irene Campos, Executive Director, Instituto Costarricense del Cemento y del Concreto (ICCYC) Concrete Institute of Australia (CIA) - David Millar, CEO, CIA Concrete Society of Southern Africa (CSSA) - Mark Alexander, Director, CSSA RILEM - Dr. Johan Vyncke, President, RILEM Institute of Concrete Technology - UK - Dr. Robert Lewis, Vice President Presentation Highlights: Dr. S. Manjrekar, of the ACI India Chapter, focused on the global activities of the chapter, new student chapters, and ACI Certification activities. Dr. Manjrekar informed attendees about upcoming international conferences including the 3rd R. N. Raikar Memorial International Conference, taking place on December 14th & 15th, 2018, in Mumbai, India. Prof. Jongsung Sim, of the Korea Concrete Institute (KCI) discussed details of the KCI convention, and the increase in paper submissions to the International Journal of Concrete Structures and Materials. The 6th International Conference of Euro Asia Civil Engineering Forum will take place at Hanyang University, Seoul, Korea, August 22-25, 2017. Dr. Nemkumar Banthia, of Canada-India Research Center of Excellence, and University of British Columbia, discussed the progress of IC-IMPACTS, A Canadian Network of Centres of Excellence. The Centre serves as a new model for international collaboration, to solve global challenges. The presentation titled, “Social Innovation through University-Industry-Community Partnerships” focused on the core research areas of Safe & Sustainable Infrastructure, Integrated Water Management, and Public Health. Mr. Omar Javier Silva of the Iberoamerican Federation of Ready Mixed Concrete (FIHP) delivered a chapter summary, and details of the Concrete Delivery Professional Certification Program. The program objective is to increase the operational standards of industry drivers through professionalization. Dr. Guillermo González, President, Costa Rica Chapter-ACI shared information on its participation in ACI Certification programs, and the delivery of successful ACI 318-14 Seminars. Irene Campos of the Instituto Costarricense del Cemento y de Concreto (ICCYC) discussed the association’s mission and values, and detailed the ACI Certification programs that they deliver as part of technology transfer. ICCYC delivers different courses to local governments, as well to construction companies, professionals, and students. David Millar, CEO of Concrete Institute of Australia (CIA), aimed at informing attendees on “What’s Big Down Under.” Several large project details were shared including the Wellcamp Aiport, winner of an ACI Excellence in Concrete Construction Award. Mark Alexander, Director, Concrete Society of Southern Africa (CSSA) discussed the seminars that the society has produced on a variety of topics including durability, testing, and recycling. Alexander also shared details of their official journal, Concrete Beton. Johan Vyncke, President of RILEM, focused on its technical committee work and upcoming events. Robert Lewis, Vice President of the Institute of Concrete Technology-UK, discussed its emphasis on education, focusing of the synergy between academic and practical, with the aim of a Global Training Qualification. The Forum was followed by a lunch presentation by Dr. Oussama Baalbaki, Beirut Arab University and Dar-Al Handasah on the Raft Construction Methodology of the World's Tallest Building in Jeddah. The presentation illustrated the construction methodology of the Kingdom Tower Raft foundation, focusing on the construction works, concrete practices related to pre-pouring, and pouring and post-pouring activities. The presentation also discussed the preparatory works concerning the construction of the mockup; concrete mixture design; thermocouples installation; formwork fixation; and precautions for concreting in hot weather conditions.
