Maximizing Knowledge on Contractors’ Day

Using recycled materials in self-consolidating concrete (SCC) was under the spotlight at Contractors’ Day at The Concrete Convention and Exposition in Detroit, MI, USA.

The session, “Self-Consolidating Concrete Using Recycled Materials,” presented research work related to the use of self-consolidating concrete using recycled materials such as recycled concrete aggregate, recycled asphalt pavement, glass, and rubber. The properties of SCC were under discussion were in addition to the effect using recycled materials on the fresh, mechanical, and durability characteristics of SCC.

Presentations included:

• Performance Evaluation of Glass-Powder Self-Consolidating Concrete
• Using Quarry Dust Powders to Enhance Viscosity of Cementitious Mixtures
• Experimental Performance of Self-Consolidating Rubberized Concrete
• Effect of Recycled Asphalt Pavement and Recycled Concrete Aggregate on the Properties of Self-Compacting Concrete
• Engineering and Environmental Performance of Eco Efficient Self-Consolidating Concrete (Eco SCC) with Low Powder Content and Recycled Concrete Aggregate

Learning and networking events were available for general contractors, project managers, and concrete industry professionals. Attendees enjoyed a special lunch presentation by Sandy Baruah, of the Detroit Regional Chamber, titled: Detroit: A Brief History and Look Forward. Baruah discussed the rebirth of the City of Detroit, and the prospects for long-term success.

Later in the day, a session “Performance Concrete: Control Your Own Destiny” included presenters discussing Performance a Mix Designs Concrete through four presentations reflecting the perspectives of the engineer, supplier, contractor, and owner. Attendees learned what makes performance mix designs different from prescriptive mix designs, and how to incorporate performance mix designs into project specifications.

“Project Overviews Session” consisted of four presentations of recently constructed, or soon-to-be-constructed projects using reinforced concrete construction. Most of the highlighted projects are in the immediate Detroit area and cover road, bridge, sporting, and multi-story building projects.

Later in the day, attendees joined over 1500 other concrete professionals at the Concrete Mixer, held at the Henry Ford Museum of American Innovation.
