R·torso·C, Tokyo, Japan Global concrete excellence was celebrated at the American Concrete Institute Excellence in Concrete Construction Awards, on Monday, October 16, 2017. The highest “Excellence” award was presented to R·torso·C located in Tokyo, Japan. Eleven additional global projects were recognized during the packed Gala event at The Concrete Convention and Exposition, in Anaheim, CA, USA. VIEW ALL WINNERS On the evening of Monday, October 16, 2017, at the American Concrete Institute’s Convention, Dr. Takafumi Noguchi from the University of Tokyo accepted the top Excellence award on behalf of project architect Atelier Tekuto Co., Ltd., in front of hundreds of global colleagues. In his remarks, Noguchi acknowledged the engineering and architectural merits of this residential project in Tokyo, Japan. The awards were created to honor the visions of the most creative projects in the concrete industry, while providing a platform to recognize concrete innovation, technology, and excellence across the globe. To be eligible for participation in the Excellence Awards, projects needed to be winners at a local Chapter level and submitted by that Chapter, or chosen by one of ACI’s International Partners. “The Excellence in Concrete Construction Awards has become a platform for collaboration between ACI and its chapters and global partners around the world,” said Khaled Awad, President, American Concrete Institute. “It is truly inspiring to see entries from all over the globe, showing limitless innovation and creativity in concrete design and applications, and highlighting the versatility of concrete.” During the Gala’s program, William Klorman, one of the Excellence Award judges, stated that, “I have had the unusual opportunity to see some of the most fascinating, imaginative and well-delivered concrete projects from around the world of all sizes and shapes. From exotic mountain top locations to beyond the shore line in the ocean, in residential and historical locations, to educational, healthcare and civil infrastructure. The attention to detail, the concern of the design’s ability to perform and provide the owners a product that would deliver on all requirements while embracing sustainability and constructability was just fantastic. Truly, the reinforced concrete industry, led in part by the American Concrete Institute, is establishing itself as the premier building type around the world.” In addition to the highest honor, the “Excellence Award,” which was presented to R·torso·C, additional global projects recognized during the Gala include: Repair & Restoration 1st Place: Market Street Parking Garage Restoration, in Wichita, KS, USA. 2nd Place: Chillon Viaducts, in Veytaux, Switzerland.
