Universities in Florida and Illinois hosted regional FRC Bowling Ball Competitions for local university students in their state. The objective of these competitions is to demonstrate the effect of fibers reinforcing concrete, to gain experience in forming and fabricating a fiber-reinforced concrete element, and to encourage creativity in engineering design and analysis. Five teams from Florida universities participated in the regional FRC Bowling Ball Competition hosted by Florida Concrete & Products Association (FCPA) on Friday, February 16, 2018 in Orlando, FL, USA. The students represented teams from the University of Miami, Florida International University, and Embry Riddle Aeronautical University. The ACI-University of Miami Student Chapter won the $1,500 prize for first place and the ASCE-University of Miami Student Chapter received $1,000 for second place. ACI Illinois Chapter hosted their FRC Bowling Ball Competition at their facility in Elmhurst, IL, USA on Saturday, February 10, 2018. A team representing University of Illinois at Chicago took home the grand prize of $750. The team had an opportunity to network with local concrete professionals and meet ACI President Khaled Awad during the chapter dinner and awards program in downtown Chicago on February 21. The cash prize awards will be used to send the teams to the international FRC Bowling Ball Competition hosted during The Concrete Convention and Exposition on Sunday, March 25, 2018 in Salt Lake, City, Utah.
