The Women in ACI (WACI) are dedicated to sharing the experience of professional and technical collaboration with emerging faces of concrete in the concrete industry by offering one full registration to The Concrete Convention and Exposition, valued at $835. This award is available one to two times per year based on available funds. Catherine Chen, Spring 2018 WACI Young Professional Contest Winner Catherine Chen, a structural engineer with Arup North America in California is the winner for the Spring 2018 contest. Catherine will receive free registration to attend the ACI Convention in Salt Lake City, Utah, USA March 25-29, 2018. “As a young professional, attending an ACI Convention will be beneficial in that it will allow me to stay up to date with current concrete research and practice. I have worked on special concrete shear walls, post-tensioned concrete slabs, concrete foundations and piles, and as a young engineer, supplementing my project experience with lessons from the other engineers/firms will be extremely useful,” explains Catherine in her application. “Attending the convention will also help me expand my networking within the concrete industry so that I know who to reach out to in the future with technical questions, opportunities for collaboration and more. Attending the convention will also allow me to engage with potential professional mentors who can show me how to get more involved with ACI in the future.” In addition to networking, the Women in ACI will host a silent auction during a reception on Monday, March 26 from 6:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. in the Envoy Room at the Grand America Hotel. The auction will feature concrete artwork beautifully created by students and others. All are welcome to the reception for light hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar. Applications for the next WACI Young Professional Contest will be available in the fall for the ACI Convention in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA October 14-18, 2018.
