Gunma University Team In an effort to support the Student and Young Professional Activities Committee’s mission to recruit, engage, and retain younger members, ACI awarded $50,000 in travel stipends to seven universities to participate in the Fiber-Reinforced Concrete Bowling Ball Competition on Sunday, March 25, 2018 in Salt Lake City, Utah, USA, during The Concrete Convention and Exposition. The winning teams were required to submit an application that included previous experience in a regional concrete competition, a travel budget, and an essay explaining why it was important for their university to participate in an ACI Competition. ACI Competitions give students an opportunity to gain experience in forming and fabricating a concrete element and encourage creativity in engineering design, analysis and testing. Professors support the competition teams because the students can apply academic theory to tangible concrete projects in addition to learning soft skills in project management, budgeting, teamwork and leadership. The Spring 2018 stipend winners include: Arab Academy of Science, Technology, & Maritime Transport Sponsored by ACI Egypt Ghent University Sponsored by ACI Paris Gunma University Sponsored by Japan Concrete Institute Qatar University Sponsored by ACI Lebanon University of the Philippines Diliman Sponsored by ACI Philippines Universidad Nacional de Colombia Sponsored by ACI Colombia Universidad San Ignacio Loyola Sponsored by ACI Peru Registration for the next ACI Competition opens on April 9, 2018. Undergraduate students are invited to submit their coursework to the Concrete Projects Competition. These projects can include computer programs, term papers, student activities, senior design projects, and/or special projects. Winning submissions will receive up to $750. Submissions due on June 1, 2018. Learn more about ACI Competitions.
