“Concrete Repairs: The Basics Still Matter: Contributions and Principles Adopted by the Industry,” was the first presentation in a two-part concrete repair session held at The Concrete Convention and Exposition, Salt Lake City, UT, USA, March 28, 2018, to honor the contributions of Tony Murray (who passed away in 2016) to ACI and the concrete repair community. Murray was Chair of ACI Committees 503 (Now 548, Polymers and Adhesives for Concrete), 546, Repair of Concrete, and 563, Specifications for Repair of Structural Concrete in Buildings, and a member of many other committees. He was a Fellow of ACI and speaker over many years at ACI Concrete Repair Seminars. He was also an engineer, materials expert, and owner of a structural concrete repair construction company. The session included speakers from the concrete repair and materials community, and the topics that reflected Murray’s wide range of knowledge in concrete repair and materials. Presentations included: Structural Repairs Using Preplaced Aggregate; Avoiding Mistakes in Concrete Repair; Investigation and Practical Repair of Structural Concrete Damaged by Freeze-thaw Cyclic Activity; and more. Find a Session Handout The growth of the concrete repair industry has resulted in the need for many improvements in materials, design practice, installation procedures, contracting processes, quality control/quality assurance procedures, and education. ACI 562-16, Code Requirements for Assessment, Repair and Rehabilitation of Existing Concrete Structures was developed to provide design professionals involved in the assessment of existing concrete structures a code for the assessment of the damage and deterioration, and the design of appropriate repair and rehabilitation strategies. This code provides the minimum standards needed to ensure proper assessment, repair, and rehabilitation of existing structural concrete buildings, members, systems and where applicable, nonbuilding structures. The ACI 562 Repair Code Portal showcases ACI’s many resources on concrete repair including informational videos, free on-demand presentations on the new code requirements, recent industry articles on concrete repair, and more.
