The recent Latin America Chapter Roundtable in Cartagena, Colombia, was attended by several ACI Presidents. Current ACI President David Lange, Past Presidents William Rushing, Luis Garcia, Jose M. Izquierdo-Encarnacion, and Anne Ellis attended, along with Chapter officers representing Colombia, Guatemala, Mexico, Costa Rica, and Ecuador. Several ACI members were also in attendance. Latin America Chapter Roundtable participants The Chapter Roundtable and 2018 Unicreto Student Competition was held in conjunction with Reunión del Concreto 2018 and was sponsored by Federación Iberoamericana del Hormión Premezclado (FIHP); Instituto del Cemento y del Concreto de Guatemala; American Concrete Institute; ACI Colombia Chapter; ACI Guatemala Chapter; and Asociación Colombiana de Productores de Concreto (ASOCRETO). The 2018 Unicreto Student Competition, the first by FIHP, promotes student interest in concrete construction-related careers. Twenty teams participated, representing Colombia, Peru, Guatemala, Ecuador, Mexico and Peru. As part of the competition, students attended a three-hour Fundamentals of Concrete Mix Design technical presentation followed by creation of their own theoretical mix design. Construction workers mixed concrete based on each design concept, and placed it in cylinders, which were subsequently checked for strength. ACI President David Lange, (L) & Manuel Lascarro of Asocreto with grand prize-winning team member from Universidad Central del Ecuador The grand prize winner was Universidad Central del Ecuador. Students Luis Vicente Morales Arcos and Cristian Jonathan Caixa Guailla received a $2,000 travel stipend from ACI along with financial support from FIHP to cover four nights of accommodation and airfare to attend the Spring 2019 ACI Convention in Quebec City, Canada.
