Nearly 70 young professionals along with staff representatives from leading engineering and science-based organizations participated in the two-and-half day conference. Eight ACI Young Professionals took part in the event. “I found myself talking to people from all over the world with all types of technical backgrounds,” said Jackie Sempel, who was recently promoted to Vice President at Burk-Kleinpeter, Inc. in New Orleans, La., USA. “I was continuously impressed when I spoke with the professionals representing ACI. Everyone came across enthusiastic, personable, and genuine.” Conference presenters covered a variety of soft skill topics designed to encourage the attendees to think outside of their technical expertise such as how to lead global and virtual teams, social styles, innovative problem solving, and presenting like an award-winning actor. However, the most rewarding part of the conference was being grouped into teams with people that they did not know. “Engaging with young professionals from other engineering associations was critical in getting the most out of my experience at the ELA conference,” explains Lauren McCauley, Chair for ACI S-806 Young Professional Activities Committee and Assistant Project Manager at Balfour Beatty Construction. “Because there were young members from other engineering associations and from different places around the world, I was able to learn from other people’s experiences and cultures. Everyone was linked by the fact they were engineers, but the way each person solved problems was different, which made for an amazing learning experience.” On Tuesday evening, the young members from ACI visited Howard University in Washington D.C. for their first ACI student chapter meeting. During the gathering, they talked about their professional experience and explained how ACI membership has enhanced their career development.
