NED University of Engineering and Technology (NEDUET) - ACI Student Chapter hosted BAMCRETE 1.0 at their undergraduate facility on January 16, 2019 in Karachi City, Pakistan. The objective of this event is to prepare a bamboo reinforced concrete beam (BAMCRETE), to experience how abundant, sustainable, and extremely resilient bamboo can be if used as a reinforcement, and to encourage creativity in engineering design and analysis. A total of 34 teams participated, comprised of maximum 5 and minimum 3 team members participated in the tournament. Each team was assigned a mentor, who was a member of the ACI working body (research team). The mentor assisted the team and determined if the team was complying with the rules of the competition. Each team designed and constructed a beam with dimensions that were 3’’ wide by 3’’ high and a length of 1’ to 6’’, using the material that was provided. A day after the casting, teams were required to remove the formwork from their structures and place the beams in the curing tank for seven days. After the completion of the curing process, beams were weighed and measured by the research team then positioned for flexural testing. The final judgement and analysis were made by the research team and the winning team was declared. A stellar trophy and a cash prize of Rs.8000 was awarded to the winning team. The ACI Eco Concrete Competition will take place on March 24, 2019 during The Concrete Convention & Exposition in Quebec City, QC, Canada. The deadline to register for this competition is March 5.
