ACI Committee S-802 Teaching Methods & Educational Materials sponsored two sessions targeting faculty and young professionals on Monday, March 25, 2019 during The Concrete Convention and Exposition in Quebec City, QC, Canada. The Speaker Development Breakfast typically held on Monday morning featured a panel on multi-cultural communication presentation. The speakers included Rania Al-Hammoud, University of Waterloo; Daniel Castaneda, James Madison University; and Jennifer Eisenhauer Tanner, University of Wyoming. The presenters referenced their personal experience teaching across diverse student populations. Topics included international exchange opportunities and modifying communications styles based on language and cultural cues. In the afternoon, the committee moderated a session called Concrete Design 201. Approximately 100 attendees comprised of students, young professionals, and industry professionals were in attendance. The session began with a keynote presentation by Ardavan Yazdanbakhsh, the Walter P. Moore Award winner, titled Concrete: An Economic Perspective. Following the presentation, ACI Staff Engineer, Matthew Senecal, demonstrated how to identify and apply relevant ACI documents to address structural design problems. Senecal used a case study of a 16-story flat slab hotel to help the audience understand how to link the information to the documents. The mission of S802 is to develop educational programs and instructional materials to promote teaching and learning in concrete education primarily at the post-secondary level. The committee meets on Monday at 8:30am at every ACI Convention. The committee is producing a Special Publication (SP) in conjunction with its Spring 2020 Educational Session in Chicago/Rosemont, IL, USA, focused on effective teaching practices used to teach concrete materials and reinforced concrete at the undergraduate level. Faculty interested in submitting or reviewing papers on concrete materials or reinforced concrete should complete the Special Publication form available online.
