University of Puerto Rico-Mayagüez received the 2019 Innovation Award sponsored by ACI. ACI sponsored the 32nd Annual ASCE National Concrete Canoe Competition held June 6-8, 2019 on the campus of Florida Institute of Technology in Melbourne, FL, USA. Serving as a Crimson Sponsor of the event, ACI promoted its free student e-membership, the ACI Competition Travel Stipend Program, jobs and internships available through the ACI Career Center, and ACI Foundation Scholarship and Fellowship opportunities. Organized by the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), the 2019 national competition hosted 24 teams from the U.S., Canada, China, and India. Each of the 24 teams competed in and won regional qualifying events, granting them the opportunity to represent their universities at the national competition. The competition consists of three days: display day, oral presentations, and race day. Each has a different focus and set of judging criteria, and cumulative scores from each of the three days determine the final competition winners. ACI’s presence was seen through its sponsorship of the competition and on the judges’ panel, as Bill Rushing, ACI Past President and Chair of the Chapter Activities Committee, and Eric Koehler, Chair of ACI Committee 301-A: Specifications for Concrete Construction, served as judges for the event. Jose Carrasco, ACI Marketing Coordinator, talks to students about ACI Student member benefits. University of Puerto Rico – Mayagüez was the winner of Innovation Award for the best use of concrete sponsored by the American Concrete Institute. “The students from Puerto Rico were able to create a vibrant blue and white canoe by adding pigment to their cement mix,” said Bill Rushing, ACI Past President and head judge. “The colors were so bright that everyone thought they used paint which is not allowed. However, the team was able to demonstrate how they created a concrete paint mixture by adding a lot of pigment.” University of Florida took first place overall followed by California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo in second, Universite Laval in third, Tongji University in fourth, and Western Kentucky University in fifth. Next year’s ASCE National Concrete Canoe Competition will be hosted by University of Wisconsin – Madison. University teams have until June 30, 2019 to apply to receive up to $5,000 from the ACI Competition Travel Stipend Program to participate in the ACI FRP Composite Beam Competition in Cincinnati, OH, USA or the FRC Bowling Ball Competition in Rosemont/Chicago, IL, USA.
