First place team (Stevens Institute of Technology, USA). As part of the Second International Interactive Symposium on Ultra-High Performance Concrete (UHPC), a companion student competition was held to grow interest in the area of UHPC amongst engineering and architecture students. The basic premise of the competition was to design an aesthetically pleasing and structurally efficient, at least 36 in. long flexural beam made out of UHPC (proprietary or self-developed mix designs) to support a minimum and maximum loads of 12 kips and 16 kips respectively at the mid-span. The student teams’ efforts were evaluated in two phases The student teams’ efforts were evaluated in two phases: 1) a written report in Phase 1; and 2) onsite testing at the Symposium. Phase one of the competition was based upon a written report and a presentation of research findings. A total of 10 student teams were invited to the onsite competition to compete in phase two, which focused on the presentation given and on-site testing at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York on June 2-5, 2019. The student teams were judged on the performance of the beam, accuracy of the calculations, poster presentation, short video showing their preparation and efficiency of beam.
