The Professors' Workshop was held July 22-26, 2019, at ACI World Headquarters in Farmington Hills, MI, USA. Co-sponsored by the ACI Foundation and the PCA Education Foundation, the workshop provides instructors in civil engineering, architecture, architectural engineering, materials science, and construction management programs, the tools to engage students in the latest developments in concrete materials, pavements, and structures. “We are excited to host the Professors’ Workshop here at ACI headquarters,” states Michael Tholen, ACI Managing Director, Professional Development and Engineering. “The combination of nationally known faculty, industry presenters, and variety of workshop content, provides the most up-to-date resources for educators.” Information on proven teaching methods and instructional resources was presented, in addition to updates on the latest industry technical information and trends. Professors also received a wealth of technical resources from a large number of associations related to the concrete and construction industries. Association student competitions were emphasized as an opportunity for students to participate in interesting and educational projects, combining networking and learning. ACI competitions give college students opportunities to apply classroom theory to real-world concrete projects; they encourage creativity in engineering design, analysis, and testing. Many students who participate are enrolled in civil engineering or construction management programs, and the competition projects test their knowledge of mixture designs, cost/budgeting, project management, teamwork, presentation, and leadership skills. Learn more about ACI Student Competitions. Sessions in the Structures track provided educators who teach structural concrete design to undergraduate and/or graduate students effective teaching methods, and models for teaching reinforced concrete design. Materials and Paving tracks provided educators with resources and techniques applicable to those areas. The Professors’ Workshop will be held again in 2020, at ACI World headquarters.
