Andres Matos, a junior engineer at Flood Testing Laboratories in Chicago, IL, USA, and Erin Maier, a project coordinator at Graham Construction in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, are the recipients of the Fall 2019 Women in ACI Young Professional Convention Registration Contest. They will receive complimentary registration to attend The Concrete Convention and Exposition in Cincinnati, OH, USA, October 20-24, 2019. The Women in ACI Committee is dedicated to sharing the experience of professional and technical collaboration with emerging faces in the concrete industry by offering full convention registration to younger members twice a year. Matos is involved in ACI on the local and national level. Earlier this year, he was elected to the board of directors for the ACI Illinois Chapter and is involved with preparation for the ACI Convention in Rosemont, IL, USA, March 29-April 2, 2020. He is a member of ACI Committees 522, Pervious Concrete, 325, Concrete Pavements, the Student and Young Professional Activities Committee and is also the chair of S805 Collegiate Concrete Council. When asked how he envisions himself in service to the advancement of the industry, Matos says, “I want to have the opportunity to keep students doing research and exploring the unknown by giving answers to the ‘What if?’ And, at the at the end of the day, sit and write it down so others can do it again and do it better.” Maier also has a strong interest in student activities. She helped organize the 2019 Great Northern Concrete Toboggan Race held earlier this year that was sponsored by ACI Alberta Chapter and ACI. “As a young professional, I would like to learn and be involved as much as possible,” states Maier. “As I gain experience, I would like to help others learn to problem-solve to prevent issues from occurring, and eventually participate in the creation of standards and informative materials. There are several activities organized for younger members during the convention including: Young Professional Networking Event on Sunday, October 20 from 8:30 pm – 10:00 pm at Rock Bottom Brewery in downtown Cincinnati. What I Wish I Knew: Involvement in ACI as a Young Professional on Monday, October 21 from 8:30 am – 10:30 am. S806 Young Professional Activities Committee Meeting on Monday, October 21 from 2:00 pm – 3:30 pm. Applications for the next Women in ACI Young Professional Contest will be available in the spring for the ACI Convention in Rosemont, IL, USA.
