ACI hosted a remote student competition on Sunday, October 25, during the ACI Virtual Concrete Convention. The objective of the Concrete Solutions Competitions was for teams to demonstrate and explain how their use of concrete could positively impact the world at large. The event was designed to encourage students to use creative means to present and explain their concrete approach or solution to a broad audience, including why it should interest the public at large. The teams submitted a seven-minute video submission prior to the convention and were later interviewed by a panel of judges via Zoom during the convention. A total of 18 teams representing 6 countries participated in the event. Cash prizes were awarded in two categories. Winning Teams: Overall Highest Score Universidad San Francisco de Quito (Ecuador) University of Florida (USA) Far Eastern University Institute of Technology (Philippines) Most Innovative Design/Developmental Use of Concrete Universidad Nacional Autónoma de Mexico (Mexico) Islamic University of Technology (Bangladesh) Missouri University of Science and Technology (USA) Universidad Nacional Autónoma de Mexico: 1st Place Winner in Most Innovative Design/Development Use of Concrete The winners were announced during the ACI Student Forum on October 27. The Student Forum served as a platform for ACI Student Chapters leaders to exchange ideas and best practices for planning virtual events in lieu of campus gathering restrictions as a result of COVID19. Additional activities for younger members included: Student Lunch and Learn keynote presentation by Tyler Ley, titled “How Students Will Save the World” sponsored by ACI Carolinas Chapter and Baker Concrete Undergraduate Research Session sponsored by S805 Collegiate Concrete Council ACI Student Networking Event with a screening of the Dream Big film sponsored by the University of Illinois Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering What I Wish I Knew: A Guide to Successful Mentorship sponsored by S806 Young Professional Activities Committee Student Poster Session sponsored by ACI Committee 123 Research and Current Developments The James Instrument Award for Research on Nondestructive Testing of Concrete is currently open to undergraduate and graduate students. The grand prize winner will receive $1,500 USD, free registration to the Spring 2021 ACI Concrete Convention, and a chance to discuss their findings to ACI Committee 228, Nondestructive Testing of Concrete.
