Register Now » The ACI Virtual Concrete Convention – known as the world’s gathering place for advancing concrete – will be held virtually from March 28-April 1, 2021, and will feature 45 total sessions. All attendees will be provided the opportunity to advance their knowledge and earn Continuing Education Units (CEUs)/Professional Development Hours (PDHs). The 2-part featured session titled Impact of Hot Weather Conditions on Concrete Repair is moderated by Tarek Khan and Michael Faubel, and will assist contractors, material suppliers and specifiers with practical information on planning, constructing, and designing successful concrete repairs in hot weather. Presentations include: Case Study of a Concrete Repair in Hot Weather Speaker(s): Richard First This presentation covers material selection, preparation techniques, managing hot weather conditions and curing procedures. Partial-Depth Repairs of a Runway Using Rapid-Set Cementitious Materials in Hot Weather Conditions Speaker(s): William Squyres 1500 linear feet of new runway lighting system was retrofitted into an existing concrete runway in the southern US and the material used to repair the runway during installation did not perform and spalling began to occur in the existing adjacent concrete. A repair was required that would avoid damaging the existing conduit and allow for the runway to be reopened quickly. Rapid-set cementitious repair materials were chosen, and repairs occurred in May 2019. High winds, high temperatures, installation details, and the rapid-set materials exacerbated commonly known hot weather concreting conditions. Using Pre-Packaged Repair Mortars in High Temperature Conditions Speaker(s): John Fauth Best practices for the use of pre-packaged repair mortars under high temperature environmental conditions to maintain structural properties and optimize repair outcome. This presentation will explore the various ways in which high ambient and substrate temperatures can impact the installation process and ultimate physical properties and durability of the repair material, along with effective and acceptable mitigation methods. Taking Advantage of Ready Mixed Concrete for Structural Repairs Speaker(s): Fernando Buxo Due to its optimum cost and availability when compared to dry pre-packed repair mortars, high-performance ready-mix concrete can be effectively used for structural repairs, if adequate quality control processes are followed during all stages. Fundamental factors to achieve success such as materials selection, quality control of mix proportioning, production, delivery, and placement considering the challenges of hot weather will be presented. Examples of successful projects will be discussed. Early Strength Pavement Repair in Hot Weather Speaker(s): G. Terry Harris Almost every state has a program for replacing sections of highway pavement with a 4-, 6- or 8-hour concrete mix. These types of mixtures present challenges for both the ready-mix producer and the contractor, especially in hot weather conditions. We will discuss the various materials, methods and technologies used to make these placements successful. Controlling Concrete Temperature in Concrete Repairs During Hot Weather Speaker(s): Eric Van Dixhorn The use of liquid nitrogen (LN) has been regularly used for controlling concrete temperatures during hot weather concreting. However, in the past, the use of LN has been reserved for mass concrete placement and extreme cooling requirements. The cost, damage to equipment and general lack of convenience with application methodologies has discouraged the widespread use of LN as a replacement for ice, chilled batch water, and/or other conventional methods of concrete cooling. Recent improvements in equipment technology and alternative application methods have led to increased widespread use of LN as an alternative to the use of ice and/or chilled batch water. The newer systems utilize a method in which the LN pre-cools the aggregate during the concrete batching process, which in addition to temperature reduction, has also shown reduced slump loss, increased finish ability windows, and other beneficial impacts to fresh concrete properties. Full-Depth Repair and Rehabilitation of Pavements with Rapid Strength Concrete in Hot Weather Speaker(s): Boris Stein High Early Strength concrete mixtures for pavement repair are challenging at any time but especially during hot weather. These placements become even more challenging when using calcium sulfoaluminate (rapid hardening) cement. Combining this material with high-range water reducing admixtures and set-controlling admixtures, while following good hot weather concreting practices, make these projects successful. Evaluation and Repair of Windfarm Foundations Speaker(s): Jonathan Poole The wind industry continues to grow worldwide. Foundations for wind turbines are often cast during hot weather conditions in remote locations. Such placements present the designer and contractor with a variety of challenges. This presentation will provide an overview of typical concrete material and structural problems encountered with wind turbine foundations related to hot weather placements. Example repairs of these problems will be discussed.
