The ACI Concrete Convention has numerous educational opportunities for younger members to learn how to use ACI documents and practices in the real world. During the most recent fall convention, held in Philadelphia, PA, USA, there were two sessions designed to help young members understand the value of ACI resources on the job. ACI Committee 134 Concrete Constructability collaborated with the S806 Young Member Activities Committee to co-sponsor a session called “How Young Professionals Learn Constructability in the Real World.” The objective of this session was to discuss ways in which new graduates entering the industry can apply critical thinking and learn constructability through their formal education, work supervisors, mentors and others as they try to navigate their way into successful careers. The 2-hour event welcomed more than 100 attendees and featured presentations by experienced and emerging professionals in the industry including ACI Past President, Michael Schneider, representing Baker Construction; Joseph Grout, a Concrete Industry Management (CIM) student at Texas State University; James Ernzen, a Construction Management Professor at Arizona State University; and Melissa Camarillo, representing Riteks, Inc – Chemical Admixtures. The S802 Teaching Methods & Educational Materials Committee sponsored a session called “Concrete Design 201: Design of Fiber-Reinforced Concrete Mixtures.” The goal of this session was to teach younger members how to identify and apply relevant ACI documents to address fiber-reinforced concrete mixture designs as well as connect them to ACI technical committees involved in research in this area. The session was presented by Armen Amirkhanian, professor at University of Alabama. The Young Member Activities Committee met on Monday afternoon during the convention to discuss plans for future sessions and engagement opportunities. The committee currently has twenty-five members and is actively looking to recruit more. Other programs for young members include: Young Member Free Convention Registration Program Emerging Leaders Program ACI Engineering Greatness Podcast Younger members, including professors, engineers, practitioners, grad students, and recent graduates, interested in getting more involved in ACI by serving as session moderators, speakers, or committee leaders should join the committee. Young Professionals (under 28 years old) receive a discounted ACI Membership of $144/year. The Individual Member rate is $289/year. Learn More
