Abstract:
A method is described which allows a computer solution of symmetrical interconnected shear wall structures by any of the widely available plane framework programs. Assuming the validity of the wide column frame in representing an interconnected wall structure, a second equivalent frame is devised to have identical behavior; in this the wide column beams are replaced by ones which are flexible over their whole span between column axes. The second moments of area of the replacement beams are derived from those of the prototype by using a modification factor for which the simple formula is derived. The modified beam equivalent structure can then be analyzed by any standard computer plane framework program to give deflections and actions identical to those which would have been obtained by using the relatively unobtainable wide column framework program.
