Abstract:
Among the variety of possible live load arrangements, permissible live load reduction factors, and different sets of load factors that are specified for the design of multistory structures, the ACI Building Code d factor procedure for moment magnification is hopelessly complex and virtually impossible to apply correctly. Applying the method, even with simplifications, is tedious, time consuming, and generally too conservative. Load cases, live load reduction factors, and member stiffness assumptions are discussed. Specific recommendations are made for frame analysis cases and for using an iterative procedure to interpret the second order effect of lateral sway. With the recommended rational analyses, the computer may be used to produce required values of design forces at critical sections. ACI d factor computations need not be made.
