Abstract:

SP43 Compiled under the sponsorship of ACI Committee 435, "Deflection on Concrete Structures," from papers presented at the 1974 ACI Spring Convention in San Francisco, California. Covers current information and the state of the art of deflection calculations. Includes an overview of the treatment of deflection evaluation in a number of codes, a review of one-way floor systems, two-way slab systems, prestressed flexural members, simple calculation methods, and complete analysis procedures.

Abstract:

while considerably sophisticated analytical tools, such as the finite element technique, have been recently used by researchers in the analysis of deformation of reinforced concrete flexural members, it may be said that simple and satisfactory procedures for quick calculations of deflections of reinforced concrete members under short-term loading, are not available. . .In this paper, it is attempted to critically review some of the associated problems and compare possible approaches to a practical deformational analysis.

Abstract:

The appearance of modulus of elasticity of concrete in the denominator of deflection formulas for reinforced and prestressed concrete structures, and the adverse effect of creep on deflections have convincingly hinted engineers to seek a concrete of high Ec and low creep to minimize deflections.

Abstract:

The problem of evaluation of displacement components (deflections or rotations) including the effects of creep and shrinkage of concrete and relaxation of steel is closely related to the problem of calculation of prestress losses. This paper presents an accurate design method using a chart for the caluclation of the prestress loss, the axial strain, and the curvature at any section of a prestressed concrete frame. . .The method presented in this paper can be used for any framed structure; its application to the case frequently met in practice of a simple beam is demonstrated.
