Abstract:
SP44 A selectionof 29 papers on the properties and applications of fiber reinforced concrete by authors from 6 countries. Arranged in 2 general categories the first emphasizes the mechanics and properties of steel or glass reinforced concrete and mortar. The second describes developments in the application to pavements, block walls, and prefabrication of structural units.

In this paper the methods of handling and placing of fibers in concrete are discussed. Along with the most currently used fibers in cement matrixes. Also, special equipment that is being developed to improve the handling and placing of the fibers in concrete. Other general topics and areas are discussed on (1) background and use of fibers in concrete; (2) types of fibers; (3) asbestos cement fibers; (4) glass fibers; (5) carbon fibers; (6) polypropylene fibers; and (7) steel fibers.

Two field applications of steel fiber reinforced concrete are reported - one, for the deck slab for a car park in London, and the other, in concrete pipe manufacture. The basis for the design of the deck slabs, and the manufacturing details of these units are described. The results of the ultimate load and load recovery test on two sizes of slabs with varying fiber content are presented. Tests are also reported of precast concrete pipes with fiber reinforcement. The economics of fiber reinforcement is briefly discussed.
