Abstract:
Accelerators are commonly used in both the wet and dry process Shotcrete to impart accelerated setting and accelerated strength gain. It is not the purpose of this paper to discuss why accelerated strength gain and setting time are of advantage in ground support, but rather to explain what these accelerators are and how they perform.

The Author has been involved in the materials aspects of shotcrete construction since 1865. At that time there were no applicable codes of testing standards available on which to base conformance testing so it was necessary to develop appropriate in-house procedures. This paper relates to shotcrete properties as determined from tests conducted on samples prepared at construction projects. . .

During the July 1973 Engineering Foundation Conference on the "Use of Shotcrete for Underground Structural Support," Mr. Thomas Reading of the Corps of Engineers' Missouri River Division Office presented a paper entitled "Corps of Engineers Studies of Shotcrete." Mr. Reading is the Corps of Engineers' expert in this field, and due to his efforts, much interest has been generated within the Corps of Engineers to develop a greater knowledge of the potentialities of shotcrete.
