Abstract:
A deteriorated, 90-year-old parking garage is converted into an extra modern research facility for the Boston University Manufacturing Engineering Department. Extensive repairs, strengthening, and redesign were necessary to transform both exterior and interior concrete. A two-story bay was created for the operation of a 10-ton overhead crane for the research laboratory. The ground floor slab was removed and replaced with an 18-in. slab to carry an unconventional live load of 2,000 lb/ft2. Interior footings were strengthened. Exterior beams and columns were severely deteriorated and required extensive, major repairs. A condition survey preceded repair work. Stirrups were missing from the midspan of existing beams and now steel reinforcement was required.
