Abstract:
The subject of anchorage to concrete is covered in the ACI Building Code, specifically in Appendix D of ACI 318-02. Presented therein are methods for predicting both tensile and shear breakout of single anchors and groups of anchors. The method for calculating breakout strength in shear toward a free edge appears to give reasonable answers for a slab thickness greater than the distance to the free edge. For limited slab thicknesses, however, the method gives results that are unreasonable. This article illustrates the problem through an example and presents possible approaches to a solution.
