Abstract:
Heavyweight concrete was used for radiation shielding of a new emergency department located above the future radiation oncology department at the Lahey Hospital and Medical Center in Burlington, MA. The concrete mixture incorporated steel aggregate with specific gravity (SG) of 7.74 and coarse and fine crushed, high-density, mineral aggregates with SG of 5.0. Design and mixture requirements, as well as material delivery and concrete placement, are discussed.
