Abstract:
The design criteria, key design features, and construction of wharves in seismic regions, with particular reference to current practice in Southern California, are described. A typical wharf structure and the related design loads used by port authorities and the Navy are presented. Seismic design procedures using displacement capacity and demand are given. The displacement capacity is determined using procedures used for bridge structures in California for the last few years. The displacement demand is based on a two-level seismic criterion in which the structure survives moderate earthquakes with only minor damage and major earthquakes without collapse.
