Abstract:
An intensive track modernization program has been undertaken by Indian Railways to meet present and future trends of higher speeds, increased traffic densities, and heavier axle loads. As part of this program, monoblock prestressed concrete ties are now being used extensively on the broad gage track. This paper reviews design, production, and testing of prestressed concrete ties in India. Research and development work to improve design and production of the ties is covered, and the technique of prestressing by the electrothermal method using deformed reinforcing bars is dis-cussed.
