Abstract:
A massive concrete foundation element in the hot and dry climate of Qatar required a concrete mixture that generated significant heat. To avoid excessive cracking, a construction procedure that incorporated air pipes in the foundation was used. Air pipe cooling was chosen over conventional water cooling because of the scarcity of water in the area, the large amount of energy required to cool the water, and the robustness and reliability of the system. Details of the analysis and construction are presented.
