Abstract:
The considerations that must be taken into account by the designer of a segmental bridge superstructure are discussed. It is shown that the fundamental principles involved in such designs are not unique to this form of construction. Flexure in the webs induced by prestressing, dead, and live loads as well as the redistribution of longitudinal bending moments resulting from concrete creep are imporrtant design considerations. Temperature-induced stresses are discussed briefly as are construction methods.
