Abstract:
Construction specifications usually tell ready-mixed concrete producers how to make concrete and require them to submit concrete mixture proportions and material characteristics. While there has been some progress in moving toward performance specifications for concrete, most specifications today still have prescriptive provisions that specify the types and quantities of the mixture ingredients, limit the amounts of cementitious materials, and specify maximum water-cement ratios and aggregate grading limits. Members of the concrete industry should be empowered to produce products, based on their knowledge and experience, that will meet the customers’ performance requirements.
