Abstract:
The paper summarizes an investigation of the behavior of circular concrete hinges under the following load combinations: (i) pure axial compression (ii) axial compression and pure bending (iii) axial compression and pure twisting (iv) axial compression with bending and twisting. Ultimate load conditions of the hinge are investigated, and particular attention is paid to the initiation of cracking at the throat of the hinge. Theoretical approaches to the ultimate and cracking load behavior are proposed and verified by test results. A design procedure for the circular hinges is outlined.
