Abstract:
Recently, an innovative interlocking multi-spiral confinement design for rectangular concrete columns was developed. This development involved testing and evaluation of a large number of full-scale reinforced concrete columns in axial compression and lateral cyclic loadings. Test results presented in this article verify that columns with interlocking multi-spiral confinement design exhibit higher compressive strength and ductility when compared to columns with conventional rectilinear hoop design. The multi-spiral confinement design was also found to be the most efficient layout in terms of automatic assembly.
