Abstract:
Even prior to the pandemic, laboratory exercises had become stale and formulaic. Some faculty will even claim that the mere fact they have a laboratory section means they are offering an experiential learning activity to their students. However, just physically doing something, i.e. mixing concrete, does not guarantee a good learning outcome and cannot be by default considered experiential. Now couple this physical, in-person experience with a pandemic that inherently is not conducive to physical, in-person experiences, and the retention of laboratory exercise content becomes non-existent. This presentation will cover how materials laboratory exercises (i.e. mixing concrete, aggregate characterization, etc) were converted to both a hybrid and fully online component while also maintaining some level of experiential learning. Some of the lessons learned will also be presented and a framework will be suggested to moving experiential activities to an online/hybrid format.
