Abstract:
Ever since 1867, when Joseph Monier patented the idea of strengthening thin concrete vessels by embedding iron wire mesh in concrete, and Francois Hennebique in 1879 decided to fire-proof a metal-frame house in concrete, great strides have been made in the use of reinforced concrete as a composite construction material. As noted in the book The Tower and the Bridge - The New Art of Structural Engineering, the development of a structural system in which the metal carries tension and the concrete carries compression can be directly attributed to Hennebique's decision to encase iron beams in concrete.
