Abstract:
One of seven lighthouses in the Delaware Bay in a system of aids to navigation maintained by the Third Coast Guard District (US-DOT), Brandywine Shoal Lighthouse stands as the first reinforced concrete structure of its kind located on a submarine site of the continental United States. Constructed from 1912 to 1914, the station replaced an adjacent iron-frame house historic in its own right as the first American deployment of screw-pile foundations.
