Description

The presentations in this course will define several elements necessary to ensure successful results when installing architectural cast-in-place concrete. This course discusses how concrete materials take on color and texture through color pigments and supplementary cementitious materials, and shapes and textures through formwork and finishing techniques, such as sand-blasting, to produce architectural concrete that is beautiful and sustainable. Architectural concrete specifications taken from ACI 301 are used to define contractor’s responsibilities for placing and finishing architectural concrete structures. The course will also cover how difficult it is for architects and designers to communicate color, texture, and finish and how difficult it is to produce mock-up panels that gain final architect and owner acceptance. Also covered are best practices and materials for architectural concrete formwork and form release agents to reduce non-uniformity. A case study is presented on lessons learned from a contractor’s extensive efforts to develop numerous mock-up panels with different concrete mixtures to obtain an approved architectural concrete color and appearance for an artistic architectural concrete art museum project.
