Description
A growing trend in the concrete industry is to provide less prescriptive and more performance-based concrete mixture specifications to allow contractors more workable materials and methods to meet concrete placement and performance expectations. Advantages and disadvantages of using performance-based concrete mixture specifications will be presented. As part of the discussion of performance-based specifications, some examples of concrete bridge deck placements from 2004 to 2014 using both performance-based and prescriptive-based concrete mixture specifications are discussed to compare and contrast the pros and cons of using either type of specification in bridge deck construction.
