Description
This is a recorded webinar from June 7, 2016.
Simple thermal testing as described in the new ASTM C1753, “Standard Practice for Evaluating Early Hydration of Hydraulic Cementitious Mixtures Using Thermal Measurements,” can be used to evaluate the early performance of similar concrete, mortar, or grout mixtures by using records of hydration-related temperature changes that track with actual performance trends in the application. Testing can be done in the lab, field, or plant, and can aid in screening and selection of candidate materials, dosage rates, and proportions of cementitious components. Benefits include the reduced need for concrete lab batches and related tests, saving time and technician resources and enabling the evaluation of more mix parameters. Protocols for passive thermal data collection of fresh concrete can be used in place of ASTM C403 penetrometer testing to approximate time of set, in many cases. Selection of equipment setups and planning of test programs for evaluating performance influences of specific materials and proportions will be discussed. Examples for troubleshooting, routine quality control, materials screening, and mix design development applications will be reviewed, with guidance on implementation.
Table of Contents
Learning objectives:
1. Evaluate the influences of changes in materials or proportions on setting of concrete using thermal profiles.
2. Plan thermal profile tests for concrete troubleshooting or screening of materials.
3. Use thermal profile testing to identify the potential for abnormal behavior of concrete due to incompatibility of materials.
4. Optimize mix designs for performance using thermal profile testing.
