Technical Questions

ACI Committees, Membership, and Staff have answered common questions on a variety of concrete related topics.

The effect of aggregate on concrete durability

Q. Does the selection of aggregates affect concrete durability?

A. Yes. Selecting aggregates that are stable and durable by themselves has always been a primary requirement for durable concrete. Recent developments, however, have shown that sometimes aggregates that are durable by themselves can be deleteriously reactive with alkalies from the cement or elsewhere.
