More than 1,500 members and guests attended the ACI Spring 2014 Convention in Reno, Nevada, March 23-27, 2014. This first convention after the launch of the new concrete.org website launch and the successful launch of the new ACI brand and logo had a renewed energy that carried over into more than 30 sessions and over 300 committee meetings. In addition to meetings and sessions that introduced exciting new research, there were plenty of opportunities to network with leaders in the industry as well as rising stars including the Concrete Mixer, the Women in ACI Reception, and the Faculty Network Reception. The Student and Young Professional Networking was a chance for seasoned professionals to give guidance to up and comers and answer the questions of students. ACI Board Officers William E. Rushing was handed the presidential gavel by Anne Ellis The American Concrete Institute introduced its 2014-2015 president, vice president, and four board members during the ACI Spring 2014 Convention in Reno. William E. Rushing was elected to serve as president of the Institute for 2014-2015. Rushing is a Vice President with Waldemar S. Nelson & Co., Inc., New Orleans, LA. He chairs the ACI Strategic Plan Drafting Task Group and the Task Group on Managing Translations of ACI Products and Services. He is a Past Chair of the ACI Financial Advisory Committee and the ETC Product Development Committee and a member of the Task Group on Communication Platforms for Delivery of Services & Products. Michael J. Schneider has been elected ACI vice president for a two-year term, and Sharon L. Wood is now the Institute’s senior vice president, which is also a two-year term. Additionally, four members have been elected to serve on the ACI Board of Direction, each for three-year terms, Alejandro Durán-Herrera, Augusto H. Holmberg, Colonel Fred Meyer, and Michael M. Sprinkel. Learn more about ACI’s newly elected officers. 318-14 ACI Committee 318 at the ACI Spring 2014 Convention in Reno, NV During the convention, ACI Committee 318 on Structural Concrete Building Code finalized the draft of ACI 318-14 for public comment in Spring 2014. Committee leaders presented three technical sessions on benefits of the reorganized Code and rationale behind the improvements; hosted a similar webinar for virtual attendees; and provided updates in the Attendee Lounge. Student Competition Performance Category 1st Place: Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León Thirty-three student teams came to compete in this convention’s Fiber-Reinforced Bowling Ball Competition. The objective of this competition is to demonstrate the effect of fibers in reinforcing concrete, to gain experience in forming and fabricating a concrete element, and to encourage creativity in engineering design and analysis. First- place prize money in each category is $750.00. Second-place prize money in each category is $500.00. Third-place prize money in each category is $250.00. ACI Foundation Tom Verti, Dan Baker, & Jim Cagley at the Tribute to the Fellowship Founders gala dinner The ACI Foundation unveiled an updated identity that more accurately represents its strong connection to ACI while driving progress, innovation, and collaboration in the concrete industry at the Spring Convention. Developed over the past six months with the support of ACI Foundation Trustees, the new ACI Foundation identity more closely aligns with the updated identity of the American Concrete Institute. Additionally, the new identity highlights the synergy between the Foundation’s three councils – the Scholarship Council, the Strategic Development Council, and the Concrete Research Council. The new tagline “Knowledge to Practice” highlights the Foundation’s role in identifying trends, opportunities, and needs, while taking an active role in supporting the next generation of leaders in the concrete industry. Three hundred ACI convention attendees gathered during the Convention for the ACI Foundation Tribute to the Fellowship Founders gala dinner to honor Dan Baker of Baker Concrete Construction, Jim and Sharon Cagley of Cagley & Associates, Inc., and Tom Verti of Pankow and Charles Pankow Foundation, as the founders of the ACI Foundation’s fellowship program. The dinner acknowledged and thanked the fellowship program founders and all who have generously helped fund the ACI Foundation’s scholarship and fellowship program. In honor of these three founders, a new fellowship has been established. This new fellowship will be awarded to a deserving student beginning in 2015, and brings the total number of fellowships available in 2015 to ten. The ACI Fall 2014 Convention in Washington, D.C. will take place at the Washington Hilton, October 26-30, 2014.
